What is Decaf Coffee?
Decaffeinated coffee is just like regular coffee, except it has had 97% of its caffeine removed. This makes it ideal if you’re looking for something warm to sip on in the late afternoon or evening, or if you love the taste but caffeine doesn’t fit well into your diet. Decaf is a milder coffee because of the decaffeinating process in itself, which makes it easier to drink black. For many, decaf is the preferred choice of coffee because it eliminates afternoon caffeine crashes or the desire for sugar, while still providing the flavour they love.
How is Coffee Decaffeinated?
There are multiple ways to decaffeinate coffee beans. One method is to wash them in an organic solvent until they’re stripped of the caffeine. First, the coffee beans are left to soak in hot water just under boiling level for hours. That removes the caffeine. The water will be drained into another container and the solvent is then added to the coffee beans. When this mixture is heated, both the solvent and any remnants of caffeine will dissolve. The water will then be re-added to the coffee beans and they soak to restore flavour.
Another is the Swiss water process. This is a chemical-free approach that involves separating the coffee beans from the caffeine by placing them in extremely hot water, filtering them through charcoal, which will extract caffeine molecules. This soaks a new batch of coffee beans in the extract created from the charcoal filter to decaffeinate and fill the new beans with flavour, which afterwards leads to the roasting and, eventually, brewing.
A more recent approach is the use of liquid carbon dioxide. The coffee beans are placed in a stainless steel tank and the carbon dioxide is introduced until there’s enough air pressure to dissolve the caffeine. The carbon dioxide is then removed from the beans and allowed to return to its gaseous state.
Is Decaf Coffee Healthy?
A common misconception is that coffee in general is unhealthy because it leads to dehydration, but there is no correlation between caffeinated drinks and fluid loss. In fact, there is more evidence to show that coffee is good for your health because it is filled with antioxidants, which neutralize the free radicals in our bodies that are linked to heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Similar amounts of these antioxidants are in decaffeinated coffee, so if you’re still worried about caffeine, you can still reap the benefits of this antioxidant-filled beverage with a cup of decaf.
Large observational studies have been conducted to understand decaf coffee’s effect on the liver and age-related mental impairment. So far, the studies suggest that decaffeinated coffee offers protection against long-term deterioration, and research is still ongoing.
